Practical questions
How long does a house clearance take?
A small flat can be a few hours. A fully furnished family house with a loft and garage is more often a day, sometimes longer. Access, parking and how much has already been sorted all change the timing. We confirm the expected window when we quote.
Do I need to be at the property?
It helps on the first visit or on the morning of the clearance, but it is not essential. Executors who live away can appoint a keyholder. We need clear written instructions about what stays and what goes.
What do you do with personal documents?
Documents should be identified and removed by the family or executor before clearance where possible. If paperwork is found during the job, we set it aside rather than treating it as waste. We cannot take responsibility for documents that were left mixed through drawers and boxes.
Can you clear a loft, garage or shed?
Yes, if access is safe and the space is included in the quotation. Lofts need a usable hatch and ladder arrangement. Garden buildings often contain mixed tools, paint and half-used materials that need a bit more sorting.
What about hazardous materials?
Tell us before we arrive if you know about asbestos, chemicals, gas bottles, clinical waste or large volumes of paint. Some materials need specialist contractors. We will not guess our way through a hazardous job.
Do you clear food and perishables?
Fridges and cupboards can be emptied as part of a full clearance. If the property has been empty for some time, expect extra time for spoiled food. That is a practical issue, not a judgement.
Will you take keys and leave the house secure?
If we are given keys, we return them as agreed — to you, an agent or a solicitor. We do not cut extra keys. Security of the property remains the owner or executor’s responsibility.
Can house clearance items be sold?
Some can. Furniture, tools, bikes and certain antiques have a second-hand market. Many everyday contents do not. We look for the items that do, instead of treating the whole house as waste.
Do you offer same-week clearances?
Sometimes, depending on the diary and the size of the job. If a sale completion date is driving the work, say so when you enquire so we can be honest about what is possible.
Are you a waste carrier?
A legitimate UK clearance business should be able to show Environment Agency waste carrier registration. Our registration details will be published on this site once they have been confirmed. Ask any clearance company for theirs before they take waste away.
